Bloody Hell…
Hey! Just a small, quick update! I’ve been working away at one of the Hell levels and I just wanted to post a few pictures of it. Please keep in mind there are not many props at the moment (Tortured corpses, floating bodies, heads on pikes etc.) I will come back to it later and add more visual details since I’m just concentrating on the layout and trying to establish the look right now.
This is one of the many levels of Hell that you’ll be exploring. Some are pretty claustrophobic, some cavernous, some desolate and open. The deeper you go, the more f***** up it will be.
A thing I’d really like to explore is the contrast between the ‘normal world’ and ‘Hell’. Not just the obvious visuals but the atmosphere of it. I’d like the player to dread being in such a place, feel oppressed and constantly in a “WTF IS THAT?!?!” mentality and then emphasize a huge sense of relief when returning to the normal world.
As it turns out, making a river of blood look like…well, a river of blood was harder than I thought! If it was too translucent, it just looked like red dyed water. Too slow and thick and it looked like gelatin. Took me a while to nail it down but I think it turned out alright.
I hope my vision of this place so far grosses you out! Now I’m onto the next map!

Looks Unreal man (hahaha), but seriously those visuals are insane, the chains coming through the holes in the ceiling is nightlmare fuel and gives me slight trypophobia. Keep it up, I can’t wait to see the final project!
That was totally the look I was going for here! I didn’t even know that Trypophobia was actually a thing. I was always grossed out by what I just called “organic patterns” of holes or other things. What triggered it for me a long time ago was seeing an image of someones fingers that had a lamprey’s mouth photoshopped onto it and it gave me a gross, cringey “nails on a chalkboard” feeling. Another one was of a stray dog and someone had lifted its ear up to reveal a cluster of nested ticks underneath! FFS it’s so disgusting but I can’t look away.
Learn something new everyday man. If you’re looking for inspiration for some very spooky paranormal effects, I’ve always found the show “A Haunting” that originally aired on discovery channel quite interesting. An episode in particular that has seriously disturbed me, even as an adult, is called The Presence. The makeup for the floating head that flashes on the screen messed with my head for weeks. I’m sure you’d scare the daylights out of me if you threw something like that somewhere into the game. Just my 2 cents, keep it up man.
